The Extragalactic Γ Ray Background

چکیده

One way to understand the nonthermal history of the universe is by establishing the origins of the unresolved and truly diffuse extragalactic γ rays. Dim blazars and radio/γ galaxies certainly make an important contribution to the galactic γ-ray background given the EGRET discoveries, and previous treatments are reviewed and compared with a new analysis. Studies of the γ-ray intensity from cosmic rays in star-forming galaxies and from structure formation shocks, as well as from dim GRBs, are briefly reviewed. A new hard γ-ray source class seems required from the predicted aggregate intensity compared with the measured intensity.

Absorption of High Energy Gamma Rays by Interactions With Starlight Photons in Extragalactic Space at High Redshifts and the High Energy Gamma-Ray Background

In this paper, we extend previous work on the absorption of high energy γ-rays in intergalactic space by calculating the absorption of 10 to 500 GeV γ-rays at high redshifts. This calculation requires the determination of the high-redshift evolution of the intergalactic starlight photon field, including its spectral energy distribution out to frequencies beyond the Lyman limit. To estimate this...

EGRET Gamma-Ray Blazars: Luminosity Function and Contribution to the Extragalactic Gamma-Ray Background

We describe the properties of the blazars detected by EGRET and summarize the results on the calculations of the evolution and luminosity function of these sources. Of the large number of possible origins of extragalactic diffuse γ-ray emission, it has been postulated that active galaxies might be one of the most likely candidates. However, some of our recent analysis indicate that only 25% of ...

Blazar Duty-Cycle at γ-ray Frequecies: Constraints from Extragalactic Background Radiation and Prospects for AGILE and GLAST

We take into account the constraints from the observed extragalactic γ-ray background to estimate the maximum duty cycle allowed for a selected sample of WMAP Blazars, in order to be detectable by AGILE and GLAST γ-ray experiments. For the nominal sensitivity values of both instruments, we identify a subset of sources which can in principle be detectable also in a steady state without over-pred...

A spectral study of gamma-ray emitting AGN

In this paper I investigate the γ-ray spectra of AGN by summing up the intensity and the power-law fit statistic of Quasars and OVV’s and BL Lac’s separately. The spectrum of the average AGN is softer than that of the extragalactic γ-ray background. It may be that BL Lac’s, of which the average has a harder spectrum than Quasars, make up the bulk of the extragalactic background. We also find cu...
